Our History
At age 16, Earle Jorgensen tore out three words from a magazine article that said “Hustle! That’s All” and put it in his wallet. Today those words remain, on signs in our buildings and in the hearts and actions of the people who today make EMJ a company committed to “Making a Material Difference®.”
Jorgensen Steel and Aluminum was founded in 1921 and quickly became a highly-regarded name in the U.S. metal-working industry. Jorgensen grew to stock one of the country’s largest inventories of bar, sheet, plate and structural steel and aluminum. Read the history of EMJ USA.
In 1989, EMJ completed a strategic acquisition to bring their tried and true business model to the Canadian market. From the very start our goal was to be the premier supplier of specialty metal products in Canada. Today EMJ Canada operates from 5 warehouse locations in Canada and 32 locations in the United States providing world class service to various industries.

Jorgensen Steel merges with North America’s leading bar and tubing distributor.
Ontario operations quickly outgrow the current facility and relocate to Mississauga, Ontario.
EMJ launches its advanced computer system, the World Information Network (WIN).
Ontario operations relocate to custom HQ and warehouse in Mississauga.
Greenfield expansion operation opens in North Bay, Ontario
Greenfield expansion operation opens in Quebec City.
On April 3, 2006, EMJ becomes part of the Reliance, Inc. family.
Quebec City adds a tube bending machine to their local processing capabilities
Precision cold saws added to services in Edmonton, Toronto, and Montreal.
Ontario purchases a tube laser to provide additional processing capabilities
Opening Dartmouth location
New building for EMJ Montreal.
EMJ Mascouche and Mississauga achieve AS9120 certification

All of our locations are certified to the ISO 9001:2015 quality standard through Lloyd’s Register Quality Assurance. In addition, our Mississauga and Mascouche facilities have achieved AS 9120 certification, reflecting our ongoing commitment to quality and excellence in the aerospace supply chain.
